It’s been more than a year since Samsung announced the new foldable, so it was time for some innovation. Today, August 11, the South Korean company unveiled two new foldable phones at the Samsung Unpacked event: the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. Both foldable phones, but in a different direction.
Galaxy Z Flip3 5G
Let’s start with the Z Flip3 5G, an (as the name suggests) phone in the classic flip shape. It is the third version of Samsung’s Z Flip, the first appeared in early 2020.
Screen
The Z Flip3 5G has a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED main display when you open the phone, with a resolution of 2640 by 1080, a pixel density of 4255ppi and a refresh rate of 120Hz. When the phone is closed, a small 1.9-inch Super AMOLED screen also appears, on which you can view the time, date or notifications.
Cameras
The device has a 10-megapixel selfie camera in hole-punch shape, so as a circle at the top of the main screen. On the back of the Z Flip3, 5G are two cameras: a 12-megapixel Ultra Wide Camera with an 80-degree FOV and a 12-megapixel primary camera with optical video stabilization for smooth, shock-free video and Dual Pixel Autofocus.
Specifications
The new model has an updated and thinner design with an aluminum frame and strong Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. It is also the first foldable with IPX8 water resistance and includes a fingerprint scanner in the power button on the side of the device. It packs a 3300mAh battery – just as much as with the previous models – one and, of course, has 5G connectivity.
availability
The device is available in seven different colors: Cream, Green, Lavender, Phantom Black, Gray, White and Pink. The last three colors are only available through Samsung.com. You can choose between a model of 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage or 8GB of RAM with 256GB of storage. The device is available for US$999.
Galaxy Z Fold3 5G
There’s a new Fold in town. The new Galaxy Z Fold3 5G is already the third iteration of Samsung’s horizontal-folding phone.
Screen
The inner 7.2-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and resolution of 2208 by 1768 is big enough for people who need a lot of images and are always multitasking. Once you close the phone, there’s also a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a 120Hz refresh rate to use for more straightforward tasks.
Cameras
On the back of the device are three cameras: a 12-megapixel telephoto lens (which zooms in up to 2x optically and 10x digitally), a 12-megapixel primary camera and a 12-megapixel Ultra-Wide camera (with FOV of 123 degrees). The selfie camera in the unfolded screen has 4 megapixels, and the selfie camera on the screen on the outside is 10 megapixels, both cameras use the hole-punch technique.
Specifications
This phone also has 5G connectivity, a fingerprint sensor, Samsung’s own 5nn 64-bit Octa-Core processor (2.84GHz + 2.4GHz + 1.8Hz), and it comes with the latest version of Android (11). New this year is support for Samsung’s S Pen to take notes on the big screen. The S Pen Pro 9 and the new S Pen Fold Edition 9 can be used with the device.
availability
The Galaxy Z Fold3 5G has 12GB of RAM and a 4400mAh battery to get through the day. The device is available in three different colors: Phantom Black, Phantom Green and Phantom Silver. When buying, you can also choose between having 256 or 512GB of storage. The device is available for US$17,99.
